Original Details That Add Value to an Old Home
In a sea of cookie cutter spaces Victorian era homes stand out and are sought after for their unique charm. If you are considering renovating, don't start tearing it apart without first understanding what makes it unique or you may be stripping the space of its value. These are some of our favorite design details that can be found in Victorian era homes that add value and character.
Transom Windows - they are beautiful and usually filled with stained glass. They are also super functional for letting additional light into spaces that don’t have their own windows such as hallways or bathrooms.
Stained Glass - Adds a decorative element to otherwise plain surfaces. Also great for adding light / transparency to spaces where you need privacy.
Archways - We love a good decorative plaster archway. Under no circumstances should you remove these beauties. They add so much interest and help break up an otherwise long hallway. Arched openings are also worth keeping, they add movement and softness to otherwise boxy rooms.
Coved ceilings - This detail makes your ceilings look extra tall. You can also do some really interesting things with paint and picture rails to highlight this detail.
Trim - Can be baseboards, window & door trim, chair rail, wainscoting and more! Often super intricate with different designs that could be custom and costly to recreate. They are typically wider than what you see used in modern homes because they were designed to match the characteristically tall ceilings of Victorian era homes.
Doors - A great opportunity to preserve a little history in your home. They can be restored or refinished so keep an eye out for these! If the door itself isn’t salvageable, see if you can save the hardware. Vintage door handles and knobs can be a small but beautiful nod to your home’s Victorian era.
We know that design is subjective, and maybe some of these traditional elements aren't always going to be your taste. Put your own spin on them, give them a fresh coat of paint, mix the old with the new! These homes are old, but the stories they have to tell are what make them so unique and valuable.
